Manhattan High boys’ basketball placed three players on the All-Centennial League team following a season that saw the Indians win the league title and return to the 6A state tournament.
Senior guards Will Carpenter and Vince Doering were named first-team All-Centennial League selections, while senior forward Sawyer Newton earned second-team honors. Manhattan head coach Benji George was voted the league’s Coach of the Year.
The honors follow a 17-8 season for the Indians, who captured the Centennial League championship and advanced to the 6A state tournament.
Carpenter led Manhattan in scoring at 15.3 points per game while knocking down 55 3-pointers on the season. The senior also averaged 3.8 rebounds per game and joined Manhattan’s 500-point career scoring club during the season.
Doering averaged 12.6 points per game to go with 3.9 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game. The senior finished his career as Manhattan’s all-time leader in steals with 146, including setting the program’s single-season steals record this winter.
Newton rounded out Manhattan’s player honorees after averaging 10.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game while adding 1.6 assists per contest. The senior also surpassed 250 career rebounds during his time with the Indians.
George’s Coach of the Year honor capped a memorable season that included a historic milestone in January. With 3.2 seconds left against Dodge City, Doering converted one of many memorable finishes this season and George picked up win No. 153, passing Terry Taylor to become the winningest head coach in Manhattan High boys’ basketball history.
Lovell Autry of Junction City was named the Centennial League Player of the Year, while Emporia’s Terrick Franklin earned Newcomer of the Year honors.
