Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday announced a nearly $50 million investment for 35 private and not-for-profit colleges and universities.

The governor says the funds will be used to help upgrade facilities, modernize laboratory and research spaces and invest in “cutting-edge” instructional technology and equipment.

“New York’s independent colleges and universities are engines of innovation that prepare our students for success and strengthen communities in every region of the state,” Hochul said in a statement. “By investing in modern classrooms, laboratories and facilities, we’re ensuring that students have access to the tools and environments they need to thrive. These projects stand for our ongoing commitment to keeping New York at the forefront of education and economic opportunity.”

The funding is being supplied through the Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program (HECap), through which the state says it has awarded $369.8 million in funding to 318 projects since 2005.
