Canaseraga Central School & Genesee Valley Central School, in Allegany County, took first place in the middle school and elementary school divisions.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — With their eye on the target, hundreds of student archers, including some from WNY, gathered in Syracuse to take their shot at a state title.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced the results of the annual New York National Archery in the Schools Program state tournament, held March 13 at the State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

A total of 560 students from 43 schools participated in the event. DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton opened the tournament by shooting the first arrow.

Students competed across three divisions: high school (grades 9-12), middle school (grades 6-8), and elementary school (grades 4-5).

Joseph Towndrow of Norwich High School was the top overall male archer with a score of 284, while Savanna Mahoney of St. Joseph by the Sea was the top overall female archer with a score of 282. Both were awarded New York Champion Genesis bows.

St. Joseph by the Sea placed first in the high school division. Canaseraga Central School, in Allegany County, took first place in the male middle school division. Genesee Valley Central School, also in Allegany County, took the top spot in the female elementary school divisions.

Students who placed in the top 10 in each division qualified to represent New York at the National NASP tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, in May.
