Drought watches for the vast majority of New York State have been dropped by the Department of Environmental Conservation.

For the time being, the only exceptions include Long Island. “Precipitation and recent snowmelt have improved stream flows and groundwater levels, resulting in upstate drought regions returning to normal status,” said Commissioner Amanda Lefton.

While regional hydrological conditions have notably improved, localized dry conditions may persist and despite encouraging hydrological conditions, New Yorkers are urged to continue reducing unnecessary water use and waste, fixing leaks, and choosing efficient water fixtures.

In addition to that, the DEC reminds their annual spring Burn Ban remains in effect statewide through May 14, with aims of reducing wildfire risk between snowmelt and full spring foliage.
