Fire officials said the flames tore through Engine 79 in Bedford Park around 6 a.m.
Firefighters were working inside the firehouse when one noticed that there was a fire on the first floor, according to the FDNY
Fire officials said more than 160 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the firehouse to battle the blaze, which has since been brought under control
Officials said the firefighter told everyone in the building to evacuate and called for extra help. The fire spread upstairs, trapping some firefighters on the second floor, according to the FDNY.
“We had some firefighters on the second floor of the building who could not get out through the stairway,” FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said during a news conference. “So they did exactly what we ask everybody to do, exactly what we teach, was to shelter in the front room and close the door behind them, which gave them the opportunity and bought them time for another fire unit to come and help evacuate them from the building.”
All of the injuries the firefighters sustained were minor, according to Chief of Department John Esposito. They’re expected to recover.
Fire officials said more than 160 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the firehouse to battle the blaze, which has since been brought under control.
Eva Santos lives in the building across the street and says she woke up to the smell of smoke.
“It was really shocking when I looked out the window. I was looking left and right because I never in a million years thought that it was the actual fire station,” she said. “All I heard was like the windows popping and a lot of smoke coming out and a lot of commotion.”
The Engine 79 firehouse has temporarily shuttered because of the fire, according to Esposito.
“We’re not going to be able to operate from this firehouse for at least today,” Esposito said. “And we’re currently evaluating where we’re going to move companies to ensure appropriate protection for the neighborhood.”
The FDNY said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Edward Diaz, who lives across the street, says this is a good reminder fires can break out anywhere.
“It can happen to anyone or anything,” he said.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to the brave members of the separate fire company sharing the same firehouse who sprang into action to rescue the FDNY firefighters from Engine 79 on the second floor,” said Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson in a statement.
