UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) — The spring trout fishing season is starting April 1, giving anglers a chance to catch wild and stocked trout across New York.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced that more than 1.7 million brook, brown and rainbow trout will be stocked in State waters from mid-March through early June.

Drought conditions at Catskill Fish Hatchery last summer and autumn led to a reduced water supply, which slowed brown trout growth, according to the DEC.

Yearling trout from this hatchery will be shorter than the usual 9-inch target size, but growth is expected to return to normal with regular rainfall.

Anglers can use the Trout Stream Fishing Map to find trout stream locations and fishing access.

The Tackle Box feature in the HuntFishNY app also helps anglers find trout fishing spots using their smartphones.
