Box Score Riverdale, N.Y. (March 28, 2026)—Mount St. Mary’s moved back over .500 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a doubleheader sweep at Manhattan on Saturday.  The Mount captured a pair of one-run victories, winning by the scores of 2-1 and 3-2.  Mount St. Mary’s improves to 8-20 overall and 5-4 in the MAAC with the sweep.

GAME 1:  Mount St. Mary’s 2, Manhattan 1

Maya Alvarez and Sharon Manni each had two hits while Sophia Schmehl pitched a complete-game three-hitter as the Mount posted a 2-1 win in the opening game of today’s doubleheader.

The Mount took the lead with a run in the top of the second inning.  Manni walked and moved to second on a Festa sacrifice hit.  Alvarez followed with a single to center, moving to second on the throw, putting two Mountaineers in scoring position.  Taylor Williams then bunted, but Manni was thrown out at the plate on a nice play by the third basemen.  Williams kept running, and a throw to second allowed Alvarez to slide home with the first run of the contest.

The Mount threatened to add to the lead in the fifth when Tristin Koerner and Emma Tawney walked with Kelsie Bandelow singling to right field to load the bases with one out.  Manhattan pitcher Karissa Spring got out of the game with a fly out and a strikeout.

Mount St. Mary’s added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Alvarez led off with a double, moved to third on a Williams sacrifice bunt, and scored on Gina Del Giorno’s two-out RBI double.

The Jaspers broke up Schmehl’s no-hit bid with a Brianna Estevez two-out bunt single in the bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lainey Brown singled with two outs, and Kendall Penny followed with a base hit to right field, with the runners advancing to second and third.  Kaitlyn Moody then walked to load the bases, and Jamie Falotico beat out an infield single to cut the Mount’s lead to 2-1.  Schmehl, however, got pinch hitter Sophia Hannappel to foul out to shortstop Bandelow to preserve the win.

Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a double while scoring both runs for the Mount to lead the offense.  Manni added a 2-for-3 day with a stolen base in the win.  Schmehl struck out thre while allowing three hits and three walks in the complete-game effort.

Game 2:  Mount St. Mary’s 3, Manhattan 2

The Mount earned a 3-2 victory in the second game with Alvarez providing the big hit, a two-run double in the fourth that gave the Mount the lead.  Ellie Meier picked up the win with Emmaleigh Zagrodnicheck earning the save.

The Mount took the lead with a run in the top of the second inning.  Bandelow walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and score on a Lia Festa sacrifice fly in foul territory.  The Jaspers answered in the bottom of the frame with a Moody RBI single to tie the score.

The Mount regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning.  Bandelow and Manni each singled to set the table for Alvarez, who doubled home both runners to put the Mount on top, 3-1.  Alvarez was thrown out at third trying to stretch the play into a triple to end the inning.

Manhattan got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, using a walk and a double to put runners on second and third with no outs.  Zagrodnicheck came on in relief of starter Ellie Meier, and after allowing a sacrifice fly, got out of the inning with a strikeout and a popout.  She then retired the Jaspers in order in the seventh to earn the save.

Meier allowed five hits while striking out three in five innings of work to earn the win.  Zagrodnicheck struck out a pair while not allowing a hit in two innings of scoreless relief.  Del Giorno led the offense going 2-for-3 with a double and a triple.
