On March 27, 2026, at approximately 4:49 p.m., New York State Police in Carthage responded to 7601 Alpine Road in the town of Diana for a reported trespass.
A preliminary investigation determined that a homeowner, who was not at the residence, observed an individual on their property via a security camera. The individual appeared to be armed with a long gun and subsequently left the area. The homeowner contacted law enforcement.
While responding, troopers located a burned vehicle nearby containing remains of a deceased individual. A second burned vehicle was later located in the vicinity, also containing remains of a deceased individual.
The investigation led troopers to a nearby residence on Alpine Road, where a perimeter was established. Additional State Police resources responded to the scene.
During the incident, the suspect exited the residence armed with a long gun and fired at law enforcement. At that time, a member of the New York State Police discharged their division-issued firearm, striking the suspect.
Troopers immediately rendered aid. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Major Crimes Unit are continuing the investigation in conjunction with the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
The New York State Police were assisted by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Natural Bridge Ambulance, Lewis County Search & Rescue, and Harrisville Fire Department.
There is no known threat to the public. The investigation remains ongoing.
