After fielding the NFL’s worst passing offense in 2025, the New York Jets made a move to bring in veteran quarterback Geno Smith.
On Sunday, Jets coach Aaron Glenn told the NFL Network that Smith will be the Jets’ starter this season.
“No doubt about it,” Glenn said. “He’s our guy.”
New York acquired Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders in a trade that involved the teams swapping sixth- and seventh-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Smith is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career, his lone season with the Raiders. Las Vegas went 2-13 in his 15 starts, and Smith’s 17 interceptions were the most he’s thrown in a season since he had 21 with the Jets during his rookie year in 2013.
Still, Glenn called Smith a “bona fide starter” and highlighted the 35-year-old’s time in Seattle as evidence of what he could bring back to New York.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that we brought a competent starter here,” Glenn said. “… I look forward to him getting in the building.”
Smith took over as the Seahawks’ starter in 2022 and accumulated 4,282 yards and a career-high 30 touchdowns on a league-best 69.8 percent passing to be named to his first Pro Bowl.
He followed that with another Pro Bowl campaign in 2023 and tallied the fourth-most passing yards (4,320) in the NFL in 2024.
Before his tenure as Seattle’s starter, Smith spent several years serving as a backup for the Seahawks, Los Angeles Chargers and New York Giants after his initial run with the Jets was unsuccessful.
The Jets selected Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons as New York’s starter but posted a 12-18 record along with 28 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.
