BENSONHURST. Brooklyn (PIX11) — Beating drums, barricades, and whistles; hundreds of local residents came out Sunday night to protest plans to build a homeless shelter next to the 25th Avenue D-train subway stop in Brooklyn.
It was the latest in ongoing efforts to prevent construction of the 150-bed men’s facility that’s been slated for this site, on 86th Street at 25th Avenue, since 2023.
This time, though, word had spread that ground would be broken for the facility on Monday morning, and protesters tried to stop vehicles they thought were on site for construction.
None of those rumors has been confirmed.

This much is known though, the protest, which about a hundred officers were called onto the scene to control, is in response to the Mamdani administration stating that it intends to keep plans from the Adams administration to build the men’s facility.
