Police in Queens are investigating how a private garbage truck driver struck and killed a young woman attempting to cross a street late on Sunday night.
Law enforcement sources said the deadly collision occurred at about 11:55 p.m. on March 29 at the corner of Roosevelt Avenue and 62nd Street in Woodside.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police determined that the victim, identified as Nishath Jannath, 19, of 55th Street in Queens, was fatally struck as she crossed 62nd Street in the northbound crosswalk.Â
Police said Jannath was hit by a 38-year-old woman behind the wheel of a private garbage truck, belonging to Royal Waste Services in Jamaica, while attempting to turn onto northbound 62nd Street from eastbound Roosevelt Avenue.
After striking the woman, cops said, the garbage truck driver stopped the vehicle and remained at the scene for police and EMS to arrive.
Officers from the 108th Precinct and EMS rushed to the scene. Jannath was pronounced dead at the scene from her injuries.
Police said the garbage truck driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by EMS; police sources could not specify how she was hurt.Â
So far, no charges have been filed against the driver. The case has been presented to the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad for further examination.
Since 2021, the intersection of Roosevelt Avenue and 62nd Street has seen three crashes, though none of them were fatal, according to NYC Crash Mapper. The location is a block away from the busy Woodside-61st Street station on the 7 line and Long Island Rail Road.
