Whenever I can share an educational moment about nature with my kids, I try to take the opportunity and go with it. This past weekend, a whitetail buck was marking his territory right in our backyard here in Western New York.
The weather was perfect for anyone who loves spending time outdoors or getting out for some archery hunting. I managed to sneak out for one evening on Saturday. Although I didn’t see much, I really enjoyed being in the woods. After more than 30 years of hunting, every trip is still another great experience.
Now that I have kids, I love spending time with them—whether it’s in the woods or watching from our window to see what nature brings our way.
As we were getting ready for dinner, this buck walked into our backyard, and I was hoping we’d get to see something neat. I had no idea he would actually make a scrape right under the tree just a few hundred feet from our window.
The kids had so many questions, and it made for some great, free backyard entertainment before our Sunday night dinner!
Archery season in New York State runs until November 15, when firearm season begins. So far, hunting has been pretty good across Western New York, and some impressive bucks have already been taken. But for me, the real reward these days is simply watching nature, the outdoors, and the world of hunting through the eyes of my kids.
