The New York state Legislature on Tuesday passed a state budget extension after clear signs the budget would be late. It was promptly signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The extension, sent to lawmakers by Hochul Monday evening, runs through April 7 to keep government funding flowing and state workers paid through next Tuesday. The budget is due April 1.
This will ensure the Legislature won’t have to return to Albany until after the Easter weekend.
Budget negotiations between Hochul and legislative leaders remain ongoing, with major differences on the governor’s proposal to reform the state’s car insurance laws and dial back the 2019 climate law highlighting the current impasse, as well as differences over raising taxes on the wealthy, school aid and Tier 6 pension reform.
