ALBANY, N.Y. (WNYT) – New York lawmakers have approved a temporary budget extension after missing the state’s April 1 deadline.

The measure, signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul, keeps the government funded through April 7, ensuring that state employees are paid and that services continue without interruption.

Budget negotiations between the governor and legislative leaders are ongoing, with several key issues still unresolved. Those include proposed changes to car insurance laws, school aid, taxes on high earners, and potential adjustments to the state’s 2019 climate law.

State leaders say the delay is not unusual and reflects ongoing efforts to reach a final agreement. Governor Hochul has said she is focused on delivering a budget that addresses affordability concerns for New Yorkers.

Republican lawmakers, however, have criticized the delay, saying there is a lack of urgency in meeting the deadline.

Negotiations are expected to continue in the coming days as lawmakers work toward a final spending plan.
