NEW YORK, NY — City officials unveiled a new public fast-charging station for electric vehicles in downtown Flushing, marking the first of 10 sites planned across the five boroughs.
The station, located at a municipal lot on 39th Avenue, includes eight fast chargers capable of bringing a vehicle to 80 percent charge in as little as 10 to 15 minutes. Officials said the site targets an area with limited charging access and a high concentration of for-hire drivers.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the expansion focuses on neighborhoods where drivers rely on consistent access to charging.
“We’re bringing safe charging hubs where they’re needed the most: the neighborhoods our for-hire drivers call home,” Mamdani said. “This Flushing hub will deliver affordability and sustainability.”
The project is a partnership between the city’s Department of Transportation and the New York Power Authority, which operates a statewide network of fast chargers. The Flushing site is the first to open under that agreement.
Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn said placing chargers near working drivers reduces downtime.
“Building EV chargers in neighborhoods where many working drivers live will make it easier to encourage a switch to electric vehicles and help for-hire vehicle drivers spend more time fulfilling rides, not searching for a charge,” Flynn said.
Officials said drivers using the station will not pay additional parking fees.
The Power Authority plans to install fast-charging stations at multiple municipal lots, including locations in Bayside and Rosedale expected to open in the coming weeks. Additional sites are scheduled across Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx through 2026 and early 2027.
In total, 66 fast chargers are planned across 10 city-owned parking facilities.
Justin E. Driscoll, NYPA President and CEO, said expanding charging access supports a broader shift away from fossil fuels.
“Expanding EV fast charging infrastructure across the five boroughs is essential as we accelerate our transition to clean transportation,” Driscoll said.
Where NYC Operates EV Fast Chargers Now
The city currently runs five public fast-charging hubs at municipal garages and lots:
Court Square Municipal Garage (Queens)Queens Borough Hall Municipal Garage (Queens)Delancey/Essex Municipal Garage (Lower Manhattan)White Plains Road Municipal Parking Field (Bronx)Bensonhurst #1 Municipal Parking Field (Brooklyn)Additional City Sites With EV Charging
Beyond fast chargers, NYC operates Level 2 chargers, slower but widely available, at several municipal garages, including:
Jerome–190th Street Municipal Garage (Bronx)Jerome–Gun Hill Road Municipal Garage (Bronx)Bay Ridge Municipal Garage (Brooklyn)Queens Family Court Garage (Queens)Staten Island Courthouse Garage
These chargers typically provide a full charge in four to eight hours and support drivers parking for longer periods.
Where More Chargers Are Coming
City officials said additional fast-charging hubs are scheduled to open through 2026 and early 2027, including:
Bayside (Queens)Rosedale (Queens)Canarsie (Brooklyn)Brighton Beach (Brooklyn)Jerome Avenue area (Bronx)Sunnyside, Steinway, Rockaway Park (Queens)
Construction is already underway at several locations, with more sites expected to follow.
City officials said the effort aligns with a goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. More than 79,000 electric vehicles are registered in New York City, accounting for a quarter of the state’s total, according to city data.
Louise Yeung, the city’s chief climate officer, said the rollout targets gaps in access.
“Expanding electric vehicle charging to communities that have never had access is a concrete step to make sustainable transportation attainable for all,” Yeung said.
The city already operates five public fast-charging sites and nearly 100 curbside Level 2 chargers. Additional stations are in development as part of the expansion plan.
