The Lore of Abandoned Buildings

There’s something about abandoned buildings that draws people in—old malls, crumbling mansions, even forgotten theme parks.  Heck, I’ve been on hikes throughout the Capital Region where the “big finish” was exploring an abandoned mill or an old hotel.

Across Upstate New York, those eerie, run-down spots have become popular backdrops for social media videos.

But now, New York State Police are sending a clear message: stay out.

According to State Police, there’s been a growing trend—especially on platforms like TikTok—of people breaking into abandoned properties to film content.  While it may look harmless online, authorities say it’s anything but.

Recent incidents include unauthorized entry into a vacant facility in Somers that resulted in a small fire. Troopers say there have also been prior arrests tied to similar activity at other abandoned locations.

Police stress that entering these properties without permission is illegal and can result in charges, including trespass and related offenses.

Could Lead to Serious Injury

Beyond the legal risks, the safety concerns are serious. Many of these structures are unstable and may contain hazardous materials, open shafts, exposed wiring, or other dangerous conditions that could lead to severe injury—or worse.

State Police say their goal is simple: protect the public and prevent avoidable accidents.

That abandoned building might look cool on camera—but authorities say it’s just not worth the risk.
