TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Author W. Bruce Cameron visited Christ the King Catholic school Wednesday afternoon.
Cameron, known for his novels like ‘A Dog’s Purpose’, explains that his Kansas ties brought him back to the state.
“I grew up in Johnson County, Kansas and so Topeka, the capital, I’ve actually never managed to make it here,” he said. “So I was so excited to have an invitation to come speak to these schools.”
Cameron spoke with students about reading.
“I love the idea that my books are accessible to all ages and it helps kids get into reading which is really important to me,” he said.
“I think it’s so awesome that they’re going to be able to meet someone who really used his talents to become such an amazing writer,” Christ the King librarian Beth Pardo said. “What an inspiration to our students.”
Cameron also answered their questions on becoming a writer.
“I’m writing a book myself and I would like to ask him a couple questions about just really when you’re writing a book how do you get past the stuff you can’t think of anything, how do you get past that?” student Averee Abbl said.
““We have great students and it’s a great opportunity,” student Caitlyn Bea said.
Cameron says writing stories can never be dehumanized.
“Everybody’s saying the new technology is going to take over I don’t think it can replace us, the people who make up stories,” he said. “It’s just too much a part of our culture.”
Cameron’s new book ‘Zeus Water Rescue: Dogs with a Purpose’ is currently nominated for a William Allen White Award, voted on by children in Kansas.
