Queens Borough President Donovan Richards has announced his 2026 class of community board appointees, declaring that days of “various demographic groups being historically underrepresented” are at an end.

Richards welcomed a “remarkably diverse group of public servants” who will serve on their respective community boards for the next two years, stating that he has worked “tirelessly” to address historic disparities in representation on the 14 community boards throughout Queens.

“Government should look, sound and feel like the very communities they serve. That’s why over the last six years, my office has worked tirelessly to correct historic disparities on our community boards and amplify voices that for too long have gone unheard,” Richards said in a statement.

Of the 367 appointees across 14 different community boards, 115 are new members who had never served on a board before – just shy of the current record of 119.

Richards said the appointees are historic in terms of race, age, housing status and gender identity.

Residents who identify as Hispanic/Latinx made up 39.1% of the new appointees, up from 29.4% in 2025, while African Americans made up 28.7%, up 6% from last year.

Those who identify as East Asian, Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander or South Asian made up 16.5% of new members, Richards said.

More than 51% of new appointees are younger than 40, while 20% of appointees are aged 30 and under. Richards, who has made efforts to encourage young people to apply for community boards, said the youngest new appointee is 17.

Renters and NYCHA residents represent a majority of new appointees, making up 52.2% of new appointments.

Richards said the diversity of new appointees will ensure that the voices of historically marginalized communities are heard throughout the borough.

“With this year’s historically diverse class of community board appointees now assuming their roles, those voices are being heard louder and clearer than ever before,” Richards said. “To our newest community board members, congratulations, and I look forward to the partnerships we’ll build on behalf of our borough.”
