A retired New York State Trooper died on Friday from an illness related to his assignment in and around the World Trade Center following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Steven W. Greene was 65 years old. According to his obituary shared by North Country Now, Greene was born and raised in Potsdam and graduated from Potsdam Central High School, where he competed in wrestling and soccer.
He graduated from SUNY Delhi and studied Criminal Justice at Utica College before joining the New York State Police Force in 1981.
Following the terrorist attacks on 9/11, Greene was among thousands of state and local law enforcement officers assigned to serve in and around Ground Zero.
After more than 20 years of service, Greene retired from the New York State Police on July 17, 2002, as a Zone Sergeant assigned to Troop B, Zone 2, in Canton.
According to North Country Now, Greene died on Friday, Oct. 24, at his home in Colton, surrounded by his family members.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, and his sons, Robert and Daniel, and additional extended family members.
According to Gov. Hochul’s office, more than 500 law enforcement officials have died of 9/11 related illnesses.
