Some NYC students may be entitled to payment

CITYWIDE — STUDENTS WHO LOGGED INTO Naviance software, used for college applications and advising purposes in many New York City high schools, may be entitled to a payment as a result of a class action court settlement, according to Leonie Haimson, founder and executive director of the education nonprofit Class Size Matters. Any student who logged into this platform at least once between August 18, 2021 through January 23, 2026 is eligible to submit a claim. 

The lawsuit alleged that the Naviance platform tracked students and transmitted personal data to Google, Microsoft and a company called Heap, including student names, ID numbers, graduation years, demographic information, photographs, survey responses and their private communications with teachers, Haimson said.

According to GovTech, students thought their messages and personal data were private, when in fact it was being shared without their permission, violating numerous laws including constitutional and state privacy protections.
