NY1 obtained surveillance footage of the incident, which happened around 6:30 a.m., from a gas station at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Avenue O.

In the video, the woman was seen crossing Ocean Avenue when an EMS ambulance made a left turn from Avenue O onto Ocean Avenue. The vehicle hit and killed the woman, but did not stop.

Some witnesses can be seen in the video running to try to help the woman on the ground.

“That’s horrible. I’m really devastated to hear that,” Dasha Khaz, a Midwood resident, said.

Mariam Tavatez lives across the street from where the incident happened.

“I have [a] toddler. It’s terrible. It’s not safe,” she said.

“It makes me feel terrible. I cannot believe it happened in our community. It’s pretty calm and people are friendly,” Gena Gruz, a Midwood resident, said. “It’s really terrible what happened.”

Khaz, 24, who grew up in the neighborhood, says she worries about her overall pedestrian safety.

“A lot of the time, there’s people, including myself, as you’re crossing here, cars just zoom past. For an ambulance to have done that, I know that you’re going really fast, but that’s horrible,” she said. “It’s really, really dangerous. I actually was hit by a car two weeks ago crossing not this street but the one right over there on Avenue P, same thing happened to me, a car just made a sharp turn, so this happens in this area all the time, it’s really really scary.”

The vehicle has been identified as an ambulance operated by Maimonides Medical Center.

In a statement to NY1, the hospital says: “The Maimonides family is devastated by this tragic loss. Our EMT staff who were involved in the incident have been suspended pending the outcome of the NYPD’s investigation. Our heart goes out to the victim’s family and friends.”

An eyewitness, who did not want to appear on camera, saw the woman get struck and believes the ambulance driver may not have realized he had hit someone.

“Knowing that the street is under construction, it’s all messed up, we got bumps, he probably confused it, he kept going,” he said.

According to the NYPD, it’s too early to tell whether the driver realized he hit someone.

The investigation is ongoing, officials said.
