ELON – Freshman Gar Hindle delivered the second walk-off hit of his young career Tuesday night, lifting the Elon baseball team (11-17) to an 8-7, 10-inning victory over Queens (7-21) at Latham Park.
Hindle’s RBI single in the 10th inning secured the win for the Phoenix. The Rye, New Hampshire, native also provided Elon’s first walk-off victory of the season, a 3-2 win over Fairfield earlier this year.
Cole Miller turned in the longest outing of his collegiate career, tossing five innings while allowing two runs and striking out three in a no-decision.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After two scoreless innings, Elon opened the scoring in the third. A bases-loaded walk by Brent Smith and a steal of home from Jackson Alford gave the Phoenix a 2-0 lead.
Queens answered with a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly.
Elon added two more in the bottom half of the inning, as bases-loaded walks by Sam DuRoff and Smith pushed the lead to 4-1.
The Royals chipped away in the middle innings, scoring twice to cut the deficit to one.
Queens surged ahead in the eighth, using two extra-base hits to plate three runs and take a 7-5 lead.
Elon responded in the bottom of the eighth with three runs of its own. A walk by Jose Mariano, a hit-by-pitch to Henry Akopov and a sacrifice fly from Hindle each drove in a run, putting the Phoenix back in front, 8-7.
Queens tied the game in the ninth on an RBI single to force extra innings.
In the 10th, Hindle delivered the decisive blow, lining a two-out single to right field to score Simon Hoffman and secure the 8-7 win.
