LOWELL, Mass. – Following a back-and-forth battle at home last weekend, the UMass Lowell women’s lacrosse team (4-7, 0-2 AE) hits the road once again, this time to take on the Binghamton Bearcats (4-7, 1-2) this Saturday, April 4. Opening draw control is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal, New York.
LAST TIME OUT
Senior Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) posted a team-high five points, as the UMass Lowell women’s lacrosse team fell 16-10 to the Bryant Bulldogs in the team’s first home conference game of the season. Shultz, who finished with three goals and two assists, was one of six River Hawks to record at least a goal in the contest. Senior Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) sat right behind her with two goals and two assists, while junior Bronwyn Hilbert (Lancaster, Pa.) added three points off a goal and two assists. Junior Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) added a pair of goals, while sophomore Georgia Ruscitti (Toronto, Ontario) and redshirt freshman Chiara Pompei (Catonsville, Md.) each tallied a goal.
LEADING THE FLOCK
Through 11 games, Hilbert paces the squad with 29 points, while Shultz sits right behind her with 27 points including a squad-leading 13 assists. Ranking third on the team, Bowers sits right behind her with a team-best 25 goals alongside one assist for 26 points. Lydon wrapping up 20-point scorers with 18 goals and seven assists. Leading the squad on the draw, senior Rachel Stax (Milton, Ga.) totals 30 draw controls, while sophomore Madison Carter (Baltimore, Md.) leads the defense with 14 caused turnovers. In net, junior Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) has started six of 11 games, making 56 saves while allowing 56 goals, good for a .500 save percentage and a 2-3 record, while Lorentzen has made 17 saves in five starts.
100 POINT CLUB
After recording a hat trick in the team’s conference opener at UAlbany, Lydon reached the 100-point milestone for her career, becoming only the eight River Hawk to ever reach the mark, joining current teammates senior Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) and Bowers.
OFFENSIVE OUTBURST
In the first-ever match against Furman, the River Hawks’ offense reached a new level, scoring 20 goals and a program-record 15 assists, surpassing the previous record of 12 set back in the 2017 season. Individually, Bowers finished with seven goals, the second-most goals and points in a game in program history, while Shultz added seven points as well with six assists, tying the single-game program record set by now assistant coach Megan Brockbank when she also finished with six assists and a goal against New Hampshire during the 2021 campaign.
WEEKLY WINNERS
After a pair of excellent performances in week one, Kuhn was named the America East Goalkeeper of the Week while Brezynskie was tabbed the conference’s Rookie of the Week. Against the Jaspers, Kuhn started her season strong in net, allowing only six goals while making 11 saves on 28 shots faced, good for a .647 save percentage and her 17th career double-digit save performance. Meanwhile, Brezynskie left her mark in her first collegiate game, posting a hat trick, including the game-winner. Not only impressing on the offensive end, but she also filled up the box score all over the field, tallying two ground balls, two caused turnovers, and two draw controls.
SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
The Bearcats enter Saturday’s contest with a 4-7 record overall, with their last two games going to overtime. Leading the way offensively for Binghamton is Emma Blloshmi who totals 30 goals and seven assists for 37 points. Behind her, Carla Curth adds 29 points and Jess Robinson adds 27, while Mia Forte rounds out double-digit scorers with 15 points. On defense, Maryn Savage paces the tea, with 17 caused turnovers and sits second with 22 ground balls, and in net, Emily Backlin has started nine of 11 games, making 57 saves for a .388 save percentage.
MATCHUP HISTORY
The River Hawks and Bearcats have battled ten times, with Binghamton owning an 8-2 advantage in those match ups. Last year, UMass Lowell earned a thrilling, 14-13 victory at home, with Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) and Jade Catlin each scoring six points.
