MIDTOWN, Brooklyn (PIX11) — A woman was killed after being struck by an ambulance in Brooklyn early Thursday morning, according to police.

The ambulance driver from Maimonides Medical Center was turning onto Ocean Avenue from Avenue O when he hit 44-year-old Cherry Cayetano Sobel as she crossed the street just before 6:40 a.m., police said.

Sources say the 42-year-old driver kept going but turned back when he got a call from the hospital about the incident. It remains unknown whether the driver realized he had hit the woman, according to authorities.

Sobel was found with severe body trauma and was transported to Maimonides Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, officials reported.

The EMT staff who were involved in the incident have since been suspended pending the outcome of the NYPD’s investigation, a representative for Maimonides told PIX11.

“The Maimonides family is devastated by this tragic loss,” read a statement from the hospital. “Our heart goes out to the victim’s family and friends.”

No arrests have been made as the incident remains under investigation.
