After decades of shaping — and sharpening — the debate at Manhattan Community Board 4 (MCB4), Jean-Daniel “JD” Noland is stepping down, leaving behind not just a record of service, but a trail of quotes that reporters have come to rely on.

He announced his departure this week in a way that only JD could. “I will be getting married,” he told the board, before explaining that there is a long-standing tradition that married couples do not serve together. “We drew straws… and I won. So I’m leaving the board.”
