Staten Island residents can expect a significant storm system to impact the area Thursday through Thursday night, bringing potentially heavy rainfall and gusty winds.

The National Weather Service has indicated this developing complex frontal system could cause minor flooding in poor drainage areas.

Monday will remain dry and cool with high temperatures only reaching the low to middle 50s degrees, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Overnight temperatures will drop to the upper 30s to low 40s, with winds increasing from the northeast as a developing coastal low pressure system off the southeast coast increases the pressure gradient over the area.

Tuesday and Wednesday will see continued cool conditions with highs in the middle to upper 50s. While much of the area will likely remain dry during the day Tuesday, the chance for rain showers increases Wednesday, particularly along coastal areas. Northeast winds will become increasingly brisk.

The main weather event arrives Thursday when a strengthening frontal system moves through the area, bringing a period of rain that could be heavy at times.

Wind gusts could approach 40 mph, with occasional gusts possibly reaching near 50 mph. The system will bring the warmest temperatures of the week, with highs in the upper 50s and dewpoints rising well into the 50s degrees.

“There will be a possibility for flooding from the heavy rain Thursday through Thursday night,” the National Weather Service states. “This looks to be mostly minor, particularly for poor drainage areas.”

The forecast also notes a slight chance of thunderstorms Thursday night, mainly for locations in the southern half of the forecast area.

Rain is expected to taper off Friday with some lingering showers, though gusty winds will continue. Total rainfall could accumulate to a few inches by the end of the event.

The storm system may also cause minor coastal flooding, with the late day Thursday into Thursday night high tide cycle posing the greatest risk. Some isolated locations could approach moderate coastal flooding levels.

Looking ahead to next weekend, high pressure is expected to return from the south and west, bringing more settled weather conditions to Staten Island and the New York City area.
