The University of Toronto Varsity Blues fencing team captured three medals at the Queen’s Open this past weekend in Kingston.
Leading the charge with a gold medal finish in the men’s sabre was Leo Chen. In the 36-person field, Chen delivered a 5-0 undefeated record in round-robin matches to earn a bye through the first round of elimination contests. From there he earned quick 15-6 and 15-3 wins in the round of 32 and 16. The consistency continued with a 15-6 quarter-final win over Carleton and 15-5 semifinal win over his opponent from TMU. Never conceding more than six points in a match, Chen closed out the bracket with a 15-5 gold medal match win versus a second TMU opponent.
Adding a silver to the Blues tally for the day, Angel Liu reached the finals of the women’s epee. Batting back from a 3-2 record in the round-robin stage, Liu would earn four straight victories through the elimination bracket to reach the event final. This included a 15-11 win in the round of 32, a narrow 15-14 win in the round of 16, a 15-13 quarter-final victory and a15-11 semifinal win. The B.C. native would fall 15-10 versus the champion from the London Fencing Club to close out a busy Saturday performance.
Rounding out the medals for U of T, Astrid Chandler took bronze in the women’s sabre. In the final event of the weekend, Chandler went 4-1 in the round-robin matches. She continued her strong performance with 15-5 and 15-8 wins in the first two stages of the elimination bracket. Reaching the Final 8, Chandler cruised through the quarter-finals with a 15-4 win, but was halted by a 15-11 loss in the semifinals to the eventual gold medalist from Queen’s.
