Last month, we looked at which programming languages were most popular in finance and found that supply vastly outweighed demand for the likes of Python and Java. In New York and London, two of the biggest hubs for financial technology hiring, the disparity is even more extreme.
We’ve looked at the ten most popular languages for global finance jobs, focusing on how many Londoners and New Yorkers in our CV database claim experience with each. In New York, almost 60% of technology candidates claim Python experience, but just 28% of tech jobs in New York available on eFinancialCareers mention Python.
The state of the hiring market for Python engineers in London appears much better. London has proportionally less Python engineering candidates than the global average, but far more Python jobs.
Python isn’t the most common language in current financial engineering job openings. Scala, a functional language used in the front office, is mentioned in more listings across both cities. It’s thought to be popular due to its interoperability with Java, and is in use at the likes of JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley
Despite demand, there are very few Scala engineers. Just 2.1% of candidates use it in London, while 3.7% use it in New York.
Interestingly, C jobs appear much less competitive in both cities. C candidates are proportionally less common there than the global average, but both Cities have nearly double the proportional number of C jobs. They also have much more jobs in C++, but New York has a much higher proportion of C++ candidates
