A New Jersey family is grieving the loss of a father, who police say was killed by a carjacker in broad daylight Saturday afternoon.
John Aponte Alarcon, a 46-year-old delivery driver out of Elizabeth, was working in Newark over the weekend when a suspect jumped inside his car, Essex County prosecutors said.
Alarcon had left this car to make a delivery near Bergen Street and Hawthorne Avenue when the suspect made his move just before 1 p.m.
Prosecutors said Alarcon held onto the car to try and stop the carjacker from getting away with his vehicle.
The carjacker then crashed into a parked car, causing it to flip over and crash the 46-year-old to death, officials said. The man was rushed to University Hospital but did not survive his injuries.
Police are still looking for the suspect, who ran off.
Alarcon leaves behind a wife and three kids.
