Four homes may get new addresses to match Riley County system

  • April 7, 2026

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – Riley County officials are looking into changing addresses on a private road in west Manhattan in an effort to reduce confusion and improve emergency response times.

Riley County Emergency Services said the currently unnamed private road, located off Anderson Avenue, has caused some confusion for emergency crews.

To help prevent mistakes during an emergency, the county is proposing changes to the addresses for four homes along the road so they match the county’s addressing system.

Emergency Services Director Russell Stukey said the change was first proposed about four years ago, but city commissioners did not move forward with it at the time.

“You know, when you change somebody’s address, you change a lot of aspects of things such as driver’s license, tax information, insurance policies, pretty much anything you get in the mail,” Stukey said.

If approved this time, the private road would be named Anderson Lane.

“We feel like it’s important and worthwhile to do it because of the quick emergency response so that the addressing matches the county system,” he said.

Stukey said there will be a public hearing on the proposal, but a date has not yet been set.
