The agency said 500 straphangers were evacuated and put onto a rescue train heading toward 68th Street. The train that ran over the object has been removed from service for inspection.
Multiple subway lines were rerouted as a result, but are now running with delays. Downtown No. 5 trains ran on the No. 2 line from 149th Street-Grand Central to Nevins Street, and downtown No. 6 trains were express from 125th Street to Grand Central-42nd Street, according to the MTA.
Uptown No. 6 trains started making local stops from Grand Central-42nd Street to 125th Street as of 11:45 a.m.
The agency encouraged commuters to take an uptown No. 6 train for service to bypassed stations. The last stop on some downtown No. 6 trains was 86th Street, according to the MTA.

Delays are also impacting the No. 4 line. For alternate service to Manhattan, straphangers could have taken N, Q, R or W trains, according to the MTA.
Anyone who needed to travel between Grand Central-42nd Street and 125th Street could have hopped on an M101, M102 or M103 bus.
