STAPLETON, Staten Island (PIX11) –  Dozens of people came out to the final Rental Ripoff hearing Tuesday night to voice their concerns about their landlords and learn more about how to protect themselves as tenants.

The Staten Island hearing at P.S. 78 was the last of five gatherings held in each of the five boroughs.

Solomon Young, who traveled from the Bronx to attend, said, “Our building is in poor condition, violations are up to the sky. I’m here to help my building the best way I know how, and get as much information as I can to help fight.”

PIX11 News asked the Mamdani Administration what they’ve learned from the hearings and how it will help tenants.

Julie Su, the Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice, said “You really see the myriad ways that people get cheated, get scammed, and are more and more vulnerable, and sometimes policy is chasing those kinds of scams, and we really wanted to listen to make sure we could get ahead of that.”

Cea Weaver, the Director of the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, told PIX 11 News, “I’m also learning so much about the ways in which non-rent fees are being added onto rent bills, that really is something that is new and something we’re starting to see for the first time in recent years.”

What can you expect next?

The Mayor’s Office said it will release a report within 90 days, along with a set of recommendations to address the issues it has heard. They said the input will also help inform the administration’s housing plan, which will be out later this spring.
