1. Former Mid-State CO charged in Messiah Nantwi’s death sentenced to prison
Daniel Burger, a former Mid-State correction officer who admitted to filing a false document in the prison death of Messiah Nantwi, was sentenced Monday morning to 1 1/3 years in prison in Oneida County Court. Burger is the fifth to plead guilty in the case.
2. Key races to watch in New York 2025 elections
Early voting is underway and voters in 2025 will decide a number of crucial local elections in cities and communities across New York, as well as a special election for a state Legislature seat and statewide ballot proposal. The off-year election results will be examined closely as the political world eyes the gubernatorial, congressional and state legislator races next year. Here are the races to watch.
3. Onondaga Co. early voting totals up from 2023
More voters are turning out to vote for local leaders as early voting in New York enters day three. More than 3,000 people have turned out for the county’s early voting period so far.
4. Tattoo shops scramble to find product as Canadian suppliers refuse to ship over U.S. tariffs
The Trump administration’s tariffs on Canadian goods, imposed earlier this year, forced some suppliers to the north to stop shipping products to the United States. That’s making it harder for some tattoo shops to get the supplies they need.
5. Newly proposed legislation would punish employers over unfair labor practices
New legislation seeks to deny state economic incentives to employers that have been found to have engaged in unfair labor practices under the National Labor Relations Act, also known as Article 20 of New York labor law. State Assemblymember Jon Rivera announced the new legislation, which would “ensure that taxpayer-funded programs meant to spur job creation and economic development do not reward corporations that violate federal and state labor laws or retaliate against workers seeking to organize.”
6. More federal workers poised to go without pay as government shutdown grinds on
As unpaid federal workers line up at food banks and airports experience staffing shortages and flight delays, Republicans and Democrats remain at odds over how to resolve a federal funding showdown that has shuttered the government for 27 days.
