NEW YORK (PIX11) — Almost 100 days into leading New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s approval rating among New Yorkers has held steady, even with concerns about the economy.
Exclusive polling from PIX11, Emerson College and The Hill shows a net approval rating of +16% with 43% of New Yorkers approving of the job the mayor is doing, 30% are neutral on Mamdani and 27% disapprove.
Just days into office, Mamdani announced a universal child care expansion with Gov. Kathy Hochul. That landmark event, along with a constant focus on housing and cracking down on bad landlords, shows in the polling.
Mamdani’s net approval on child care is +33%. It is +24% on housing and +13% on policing and public safety. Nearly 60% of New Yorkers said that, in general, Mamdani is focusing on the issues important to them.
However, Mamdani is only slightly above water at +3% on his handling of the city budget and a multi-billion-dollar deficit. He floated the idea of a property tax increase as a last resort, if state lawmakers did not pass new taxes on millionaires and corporations.

Polling shows that New Yorkers do generally support that idea, with 55% saying the state should raise taxes on the wealthy. However, 41% said the city needs to better manage its spending. Very few people, 4% of those surveyed, support a property tax hike.
The tax increase debate comes as many New Yorkers feel the city’s economy is shaky, with job growth stagnating.
A majority of New Yorkers, 59%, feel the city is headed in the wrong direction. Moreover, the poll asked people to rate the city’s economy: 40% of New Yorkers rate the economy as poor; 38% rate it as fair; only 16% say the city’s economy is good, and 3% say it’s excellent.
New Yorkers were also asked to weigh the impact of a potential corporate tax increase, which the mayor has been pushing. Forty-four percent of people said it would not cause companies to leave the city, but 30% were worried about jobs leaving, and 27% were unsure what the result of a corporate tax increase might be.
However, 65% of those surveyed were more supportive of the mayor’s plan to tax millionaires.
Finally, New Yorkers were asked to grade the mayor’s response to the major winter storms the city faced at the beginning of the year. Of those polled, 29% gave him an A, 33% gave him a B, 18% gave him a C, 9% gave him a D, 11% gave him an F.
The Emerson College Polling survey was conducted April 5-6, 2026. The overall sample of New York City registered voters, n=850, has a credibility interval, similar to a poll’s margin of error (MOE), of +/- 3.4 percent. The data sets were weighted by gender, education, race, age, party registration, and region based on U.S. Census parameters and voter file data.
