1. Dozens of city schools to get direct 911 link for emergencies
New York will become the first city in the nation to directly link public schools to the 911 system, part of a new pilot program officials say will speed up emergency response times in the event of an active shooter or other weapon-related threat.
Mayor Eric Adams announced the initiative today at Spring Creek Community School in Brooklyn, the first school campus to install the system.
2. Rockefeller Center tree to come from Capital Region
The next Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree will come from the Capital Region.
A Norway spruce from East Greenbush has been selected to travel to New York City and serve as this year’s version of the tree, wrapped with more than 50,000 lights and topped with a star.
3. Release the fish: Hudson River Park event spotlights local biodiversity
Hudson River Park’s “Release of the Fishes” will take place Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. The fish and other aquatic creatures have been temporary residents at the park’s Wetlab.
NY1’s Roger Clark got a preview of the event, during which a 10-foot slide will be used to return the creatures to their Hudson River home.
4. Trial starts in case of ex-trooper accused of killing girl in Thruway chase
Jury selection began today in the trial of a former New York state trooper accused of twice ramming his cruiser into an SUV during a high-speed chase on the New York State Thruway, causing the SUV to roll over and kill an 11-year-old passenger.
Christopher Baldner is charged with second-degree murder and reckless endangerment in connection with the December 2020 death of Monica Goods, 11, of Brooklyn.
5. More federal workers poised to go without pay as government shutdown grinds on
As unpaid federal workers line up at food banks and airports experience staffing shortages and flight delays, Republicans and Democrats remain at odds over how to resolve a federal funding showdown that has shuttered the government for 27 days.
With hundreds of thousands of federal workers missing paychecks and 40 million low-income Americans at risk of losing food benefits beginning this weekend unless the government reopens, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said Monday that the stalemate is “a simple math problem. We need Democrats to help.”
6. U.S. stocks rally toward more records ahead of pivotal week for Wall Street
Stocks are climbing toward more records today ahead of a week packed with potentially market-moving events for Wall Street.
The S&P 500 rose 0.9%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 254 points, or 0.5%, as of 10:45 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 1.5% higher. All are adding to their latest all-time highs set on Friday.
