BAY RIDGE – FOLLOWING YEARS OF planning, the newly renovated Owl’s Head Park Playground, 6701 Colonial Rd., officially opened to the public April 8.
“This reconstruction of Owl’s Head Park gives the Bay Ridge community a revitalized space to play, gather with friends, and take in fresh air, just in time for spring,” said NYC Parks Brooklyn Borough Commissioner Martin Maher. “The park looks completely transformed, with new landscaping, a full reconstruction of the playground with new equipment for kids of all ages, and an upgraded spray shower for hot summer days. I’m especially proud of the improvements we’ve made to the Billy Lake basketball courts, named after a local firefighter who sacrificed his life on 9/11.”
In 2021, representatives from New York City Parks Department presented new design plans for the renovations of Owl’s Head Park to Community Board 10 members during a meeting. Goals for the area included upgrading active play capacity for the park and neighborhood, facilitating passive use and community events, and enhancing environmental amenities at the site.
“This is a huge improvement to the park that builds on our recent work to reconstruct the pavements throughout the space, making it more accessible and welcoming,” Maher said. “We’re grateful to Councilmember Kayla Santosuosso and her predecessor Justin Brannan for funding this important renovation.”
According to the NYC Parks website, construction started February 2025 and was completed March 2026. Total funding for the project was listed at $8 million. Parks will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for the playground later this summer.
