STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Authorities removed 50 firearms from the streets of Staten Island at a gun buyback event held Saturday at Christ Assembly Lutheran Church in Stapleton.

The “no questions asked” Cash for Guns program, organized by the NYPD and Richmond County District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, collected 25 revolvers, 17 semi-automatic pistols, one assault weapon, four rifles and three other weapons, which included BB guns, pellet guns, air guns and replicas, according to a spokesperson for McMahon.

“Prosecuting dangerous criminals who carry, brandish, and use illegal firearms, and ensuring that they face serious consequences in the courtroom will always be my office’s top priority,” McMahon said. “However, prevention is also deeply critical to mitigating acts of gun violence and ensuring public safety.”

McMahon highlighted the program’s success, noting that it has taken nearly 1,000 firearms out of circulation since 2016, contributing to Staten Island’s status as what he referred to as “the safest borough in New York City.”

“One less gun on our streets could save a life,” McMahon added.

In addition to the district attorney, NYPD Patrol Borough Staten Island Deputy Chief Amir Yakatally and NYPD Community Affairs Assistant Commissioner Alden Foster attended the event.

McMahon expressed gratitude to the NYPD, Christ Assembly Lutheran Church, and his office staff for their contributions to the event, adding that “Staten Island is safer today because of these efforts.”

According to NYPD CompStat data from Oct. 19, there have been nine shooting victims and nine shooting incidents on Staten Island this year.
