Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield argued in a New York City courtroom today in a case challenging President Donald Trump’s tariffs, focusing on the administration’s use of the 1974 Trade Act.

Rayfield, alongside the attorneys general of California and New York, argued that the Trump administration is changing definitions of terms such as “balance of payments” to justify imposing tariffs worldwide — first at 10% and then at 15%.

The hearing lasted three hours, with Rayfield and attorneys for the Trump administration going into detail about the law.

Rayfield said he hopes to get a ruling within the next few weeks.

He also said he expects the Trump administration will file an appeal after a decision, in an effort to continue charging tariffs.
