STAFFORD, N.Y. — A Churchville man is facing charges after New York State Police say he was driving while intoxicated during a deadly crash on the Thruway in Genesee County.

Patrick Hastings, 67, is charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, DWI, and traffic violations. The crash happened on Friday, just before 9 p.m., in Stafford.

Troopers say Hastings’s car hit a truck from behind while heading eastbound between exit 48 to Batavia and exit 47 to Rochester/LeRoy. The crash caused the truck to flip, and the driver to be ejected. State Police say the driver, 56-year-old Scott Berberian of Syracuse, died at the scene.

According to troopers, Hastings wasn’t hurt and appeared impaired. Troopers say he failed sobriety tests and had a .08% BAC breath sample when they took him to the state police station in Batavia.

Hastings was taken to Genesee County Jail for arraignment. State Police are still investigating the crash and are asking anyone with information or dash camera footage to call them at 585-344-6200.
