Queen Mary of Denmark has paid tribute to her “beloved father” after he died in Hobart aged 84.

Professor John Dalgleish Donaldson was a professor of applied mathematics and was born in Scotland on September 5, 1941, according to a statement from the Royal House of Denmark.

His health had been declining in recent years, with the Australian-born Queen Mary last visiting him in March during a royal tour of the country with her husband King Frederik

“My heart is heavy, and my thoughts are grey. My beloved father has passed away,” the queen said in a statement.

“But I know that when the grief settles, the memories will brighten my day, and what will remain strongest is love and gratitude for everything he gave me and taught me.”

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
