BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WBNG) — New York State Police remind drivers that it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus when its red lights are flashing.
On Oct. 22, troopers from Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Tompkins, Tioga, Cortland and Otsego counties participated in Operation Safe Stop.
During the operation, troopers followed along bus routes to enforce traffic safety laws.
One ticket was issued in Broome County to a driver for passing a school bus illegally.
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles estimates that every day, as many as 50,000 drivers pass school buses illegally across the state.
Operation Safe Stop seeks to promote school bus safety through education and enforcement efforts.
The project is a collaboration supported by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, the New York Association for Pupil Transportation, the New York State School Bus Contractors Association, the student transportation industry and state, county, city and local law enforcement agencies.
