ONEONTA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — New York State Police are asking for the public’s help in solving an over-45-year-old homicide involving an Oneonta native.
State Police with Troop C out of Sidney announced on Tuesday, April 14 that investigators are actively pursuing leads in the death of Barry Marquart from 1980.
Marquart, an Oneonta native, was reported missing in November 1980 by his father. The 30-year-old Marquart was living in Binghamton with a roommate, who had reported not seeing him for two days.
Marquart’s car was eventually found in a rest stop in the town of Dickinson in Broome County, and his wallet was found in nearby Otsiningo Park. Police say that his body was eventually found 500 feet away from the rest area.
An autopsy determined that Marquart had drowned, but also indicated injuries consistent with blunt-force trauma to his head and face.
Investigators with the New York State Police’s Major Crimes Unit developed a sketch during their initial investigation, which can be seen below and is being used for the renewed investigation.

State Police say that the individual is described as a white male who would have been in his 20s or 30s in 1980. He is described as being five feet, ten inches tall and between 140 and 160 points. He would have been in the Binghamton area in November of 1980.
Police say that the individual is not currently being considered as a suspect. However, he has never been publicly identified and may have information regarding the investigation.
