The State Department of Transportation is holding a public open house on the Route 7 traffic calming project in Niskayuna.

The department plans to reduce speeds, install a raised median and use other traffic calming measures on Route 7 between Mohegan Road and Union Avenue. Another part of the proposal calls for narrowing travel lanes and adding 4-foot-wide striped shoulders.

There have been several fatal crashes along that stretch of Route 7.

Tonight’s meeting starts at 5 at Iroquois middle school in Niskayuna. Attendees will see conceptual drawings and hear from DOT engineers about the project.

The DOT hopes to begin construction next year.
