A group of Queens students from IS109 recently competed at New York Edge’s Battle of the Baskets cooking competition and were named this year’s champion! During the two rounds of competition, I.S. 109Q impressed judges with their originality, presentation, and strong teamwork under pressure.
The culinary showdown brought together student teams from across New York City for a fast-paced, mystery-ingredient cooking competition designed to highlight creativity, teamwork, and confidence in the kitchen. Each team was challenged to transform a set of surprise ingredients into a cohesive menu under pressure, including pasta for the entrée (provided by Pasta Garofalo), and peaches for the dessert course – pushing students to think outside the box across both savory and sweet dishes.
This competition is part of New York Edge’s Food Explorers program, which helps students build culinary skills, confidence, and collaboration through hands-on learning experiences.
