1. Public input sought for I-81 community grid murals

Residents are being asked to help choose mural designs that will appear on bridges, underpasses and retaining walls throughout the city, including the 15th Ward, the 690 underpass, South Side and the Northside.

2. DOT closes select northbound I-81 lanes for bridge work

The New York Department of Transportation is closing lanes on Interstate 81 to allow for bridge work. All northbound lanes at the 481 interchange south of the city have been closed during evenings.

3. Syracuse’s Columbus statue still standing years after Mayor Walsh said he wanted it removed

As America recognizes Columbus Day — it doesn’t come without controversy. Communities across the country have changed the name of the day to National Indigenous Peoples Day, and some even removed statues of the man history tells us discovered America. In Syracuse, Mayor Ben Walsh announced plans to have its Christopher Columbus statue relocated — a decision that was met with a lot of blowback.

4. Baldwin Fund working toward $50 million goal for Upstate cancer institute

The Baldwin Fund and Upstate Medical University are on a five-year timeline to fund a national cancer institute in Central New York to serve patients from across New York and the country.

5. Researchers making AEDs more accessible for deaf users

Nearly 90% of cardiac arrests that happen outside of the hospital each year are deadly, according to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation. However, chances for survival can go up significantly if a bystander uses an automated external defibrillator.

6. Trump urges leaders at Egypt summit to put ‘the old feuds’ to rest and seize momentum for peace

President Donald Trump arrived in Egypt on Monday for a global summit on Gaza’s future as he tries to advance peace in the Middle East after visiting Israel to celebrate a U.S.-brokered ceasefire with Hamas. The whirlwind trip, which included a speech at the Knesset in Jerusalem earlier in the day, comes at a fragile moment of hope for ending two years of war between Israel and Hamas.
