WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – This evening, Wilmington’s Fuzzy Needle, a vinyl shop and bookstore, partnered with the Cape Fear Literacy Council to host an event supporting free adult education in the Wilmington community.
Tickets to the event were $10, with all proceeds benefiting the Cape Fear Literacy Council. Donations were also accepted.
The night featured New York City–based author Laurie Gwen Shapiro, who read from her latest book, The Aviator and the Showman, a retelling of the Amelia Earhart story that centers on her marriage and how it shaped Earhart’s career. After the reading, Shapiro was joined for an audience Q&A moderated by acclaimed writer John Jeremiah Sullivan, Southern Editor for The Paris Review and a Wilmington native.
In addition to the reading, Wilmington musician Julia Rothenberger captivated the room by performing some of her original music. The evening came to a close with a live DJ set, allowing attendees to interact and dance.
“Events like this are really at the heart of what we’re trying to create at The Fuzzy Needle,” said owner Tim Jarman. “We want the shop to be a place where stories, music, and people can come together in a way that feels real and shared. Welcoming Laurie Gwen Shapiro, alongside local music and a conversation that supports the Cape Fear Literacy Council, makes this one especially meaningful to me and to our space.”
