Four suspects ranging in age from 17 to 25 were arrested Sunday and hit with multiple charges, including murder, the NYPD said.

Dozens of shots fired, neighbors say

Officers responded to Burke and Wickham avenues just before 7:30 p.m. Saturday on a report of multiple people shot, police said. They found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest and a teenage girl with a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

Both were taken to a local hospital, where the man, identified as 32-year-old Jaceil Banks of the Bronx, was pronounced dead. Police say 17-year-old Anthonaya Campbell, from Hartford, Connecticut, remains in critical condition.

According to police, several other victims arrived at local hospitals by private means, including a 31-year-old man who was shot in the back, a 29-year-old woman who was shot in the back, and a 42-year-old man whose arm was grazed by a bullet. Police said all of those victims are in stable condition.

Neighbors said they heard several rounds of gunshots.

“It was something like a machine gun. It was not ‘pow, pow,’ like a revolver, two or three shots. It was a constant [gunfire sound],” a man named Peter said.

“We started hearing and were thinking, fireworks? No. We started hearing multiple, I mean like multiple, gunshots,” Mayra Alvarez added.

Teen’s family members ask for more NYPD at Haffen Park

Jennifer Talbot, the 17-year-old’s mother, said Campbell had come to the Bronx to visit her grandmother, before going back to school to finish a medical assistance program, adding she aspires to be a speech pathologist.

“It’s heartbreaking. You don’t give birth to your children in order to see them on a trach and set up to a life support unit,” the mother said. “She has a heart of gold and she loves everybody. She don’t have an enemy.”

“She didn’t deserve this. Nobody could deserve this because that could’ve been my kids,” the teen’s aunt said.

Police say 17-year-old Anthonaya Campbell, from Hartford, Connecticut, remains in critical condition after a shooting at a basketball tournament in the Bronx.

Family handout

Campbell’s mother said the bullet is lodged in her eye.

“My grandson was there and he ran up to her and thought she was dead, and he ran,” Talbot said.

She added her daughter lost a critical amount of time waiting for first responders.

“It took about 17 minutes for my daughter to get CPR, which made a big difference to the condition she has now,” said Talbot.

As Campbell’s family members pray for her speedy recovery, they’re demanding a stronger police presence around Haffen Park.

“Where are the police for our children that are down here?” the teen’s mother said.

“My kids was raised in that park. My niece just turned 17 and she was gonna head back up to Hartford to go back to school, and now we don’t even know what’s gonna happen,” the aunt added.

The investigation is ongoing. Police are asking any potential witnesses or anyone with information regarding this shooting to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline 1-800-577-TIPS (1-800-577-8477) or send a direct message on X to NYPDTips.
