COPAKE — Two Hillsdale residents were killed Thursday afternoon in a crash involving a gasoline tanker truck in Columbia County, authorities said.
The crash occurred around 3:14 p.m. at the intersection of county Route 7 and state Route 23, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said a 2022 Subaru Outback, driven by John Piwowarski, 78, entered Route 23 and was struck by an eastbound tanker truck carrying about 7,000 gallons of gasoline. Piwowarski was pronounced dead at the scene.
His wife, Janet K. Piwowarski, 76, who was also in the vehicle, was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, where she later died.
The truck driver, a man from Cohoes, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The tanker truck is owned by GRJH, Inc. of Millerton.
The crash remains under investigation.
