STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A tumultuous election cycle is pushing Staten Islanders to the early voting booths in swaths unseen in the previous mayoral elections.

According to data obtained by the Gothamist, roughly 50% of voters heading to the polls are 55-years-old and up — a stark transition from the young adults who conquered early voting during June’s Democratic primary election.

Across the five boroughs, early voting is skyrocketing as the three-way race between Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, and Independent candidate Andrew Cuomo is coming to a boiling point.

NYC Mayor's Race

Just two days into New York City’s early voting, Gothamist wrote that “…2025 turnout is more than five times what it was during the 2021 general election for New York City mayor.”

On Staten Island alone, over 12,000 voters turned out to their local polling places.

This figure is nearly four times that of the 2021 turnout, which only hit 3,236 Staten Islanders participating in early voting.

Breaking it down by district, Staten Islanders living on the South Shore and Mid-Island came out the strongest based on the information provided by the Gothamist, depicted below:

Staten Island City Council District
Early Voters

49
2,670

50
4,664

51
5,486

Total
12,820

District 51 covers the South Shore and parts of the Mid-Island. District 50 makes up the rest of the Mid-Island, while District 49 covers the North Shore.

The mayoral race is the most controversial on the ballot this November, but it’s not the only race Staten Islanders are casting their vote on.

Islanders will need to determine the fate of their respective City Council representatives — either reelecting them to their seat, or handing the torch to their challenger.
