1. NYSCOPBA to Hochul: State prisons in ‘systemic emergency’ amid surge in violence, contraband

The New York state Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA) in a letter to Gov. Kathy Hochul Monday declared that the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) is in a full-scale “systemic emergency” following a surge in violence, contraband, staff assaults and deaths inside prisons, among other issues.

2. As businesses begin claiming tariff refunds, Hochul says New Yorkers ‘deserve their money back’

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday reiterated her calls for the Trump administration to refund an estimated $13.5 billion in tariff payments to New Yorkers as importers and their brokers were able Monday to begin claiming refunds through an online portal after the Supreme Court in February struck down many of the president’s far-reaching tariffs.

3. Resurfacing to cause lane closures on I-81 in Broome County for several months

Starting Monday, drivers on Interstate 81 in Broome County will see right lane closures for the next several months between exits 16 and 21.

5. New York lawmakers pass fifth state budget extender that runs through Wednesday

The New York state Legislature on Monday passed a fifth state budget extension — now nearly three weeks past the budget’s deadline — which was sent to Gov. Kathy Hochul for her signature. The extender runs through Wednesday and funds Medicaid, payroll, schools and other essential expenses.

6. Doubts over talks between Iran and U.S. after violence flares in Strait of Hormuz

Pakistan moved ahead Monday with preparations for a new round of talks between the United States and Iran two days before a tenuous ceasefire is set to expire, even as renewed conflict around the Strait of Hormuz raised questions about whether the meeting would take place.
